Your Property Has Grown.
It’s Time Your Electrical Service Kept Up.
There’s a version of this story that plays out in homes and businesses all over Southwest Florida.
You add an EV charger. Or a whole-home generator. Or a new HVAC system. Or you finish the garage and add a workshop. Everything seems fine at first — and then the breakers start tripping. Or the new equipment underperforms.
Or an electrician tells you what you were hoping not to hear: your electrical service isn’t large enough to support what you’re asking of it.
It’s not a failure of planning. It’s just the reality of living in a time when homes and businesses demand significantly more electrical capacity than they did 20, 30, or 40 years ago. The service that was perfectly adequate when your home was built simply wasn’t designed for the way you live and work today.
An electrical service upgrade changes that. It gives your property the capacity it needs — now and for years to come — and it removes the ceiling that’s been quietly limiting everything your electrical system can do.
Jeff Masters Electric provides electrical service upgrades for homeowners, businesses, and property managers throughout Southwest Florida. We handle the process from start to finish — correctly, professionally, and with clear communication every step of the way.
What Is an Electrical Service Upgrade?
Your electrical service is the connection between the utility grid and your property’s electrical system. It includes the service entrance wires, the meter and meter base, and the main panel where power is distributed to your circuits.
Most older homes were built with 100-amp service — which was sufficient for the electrical demands of that era. Today, a home with central air conditioning, multiple large appliances, an EV charger, and modern electronics can easily exceed that capacity.
A service upgrade — sometimes called a service upgrade from 100 to 200 amp, or a 200 to 400 amp upgrade for larger properties — replaces the service entrance equipment and main panel with new components sized to support your current and future electrical needs.
The result is a system that can handle modern demands safely, meets current code requirements, and gives you the headroom to add capacity in the future without hitting a wall.
Signs You May Need an Electrical Service Upgrade
You’re planning to install an EV charger. Level 2 EV chargers typically require a dedicated 240-volt circuit drawing 40 to 50 amps or more. If your service is already running near capacity, adding an EV charger may require a service upgrade first.
You’re installing a whole-home generator or battery backup system. Generators and whole-home battery systems require transfer switches and significant dedicated capacity. A service upgrade is often a necessary part of that installation.
Your breakers trip regularly under normal use. Frequent tripping — especially on circuits that serve large appliances or HVAC equipment — can indicate that your service is consistently being pushed beyond its capacity.
You’re adding a major appliance or system. A new HVAC system, a hot tub, a pool pump, an electric range, or a large workshop all add meaningful electrical load. Before installation, it’s worth confirming your service can support it.
You’re planning a significant addition or renovation. Adding square footage, finishing a basement, or converting a garage adds circuits and load to your system. If your current service is already near its limit, a renovation is a natural time to address it.
Your home has 100-amp service and is more than 20 years old. If your home was built or last upgraded before the mid-2000s and still has 100-amp service, it’s worth having a professional evaluate whether that service level is adequate for how you’re using the property today.
You’re purchasing a property and want to understand its capacity. Before closing on a home or commercial property, knowing the service capacity — and whether it supports your plans — is valuable information to have.
Electrical Service Upgrade Services We Provide
100-Amp to 200-Amp Service Upgrades The most common service upgrade for residential properties. We replace the service entrance equipment, meter base, and main panel to bring your property up to 200-amp service — the standard for modern homes.
200-Amp to 400-Amp Service Upgrades For larger homes, properties with significant electrical loads, or facilities that need room for substantial future growth, a 400-amp service upgrade provides the capacity to support it all.
Meter Base and Service Entrance Replacement Sometimes the service entrance wiring and meter base need to be replaced as part of an upgrade — or independently, when the existing equipment is damaged, outdated, or no longer meets utility requirements.
Main Panel Replacement and Upgrade A service upgrade almost always includes replacing the main panel with new equipment properly sized for the new service level. We install modern panels with adequate circuit capacity, clearly labeled, and built to last.
Utility Coordination Service upgrades require coordination with your local utility provider — scheduling the disconnect and reconnect of service, and ensuring the new equipment meets their specifications. We handle that coordination so you don’t have to.
Permit Management Electrical service upgrades are permitted work. We handle the permit process, schedule the required inspection, and make sure everything is documented correctly before the job is considered complete.
Load Analysis and Service Sizing Before recommending a service size, we perform the load calculations necessary to determine what your property actually needs — accounting for current use and reasonable future growth. We size the system correctly, not just adequately.
Who Needs a Service Upgrade?
Homeowners adding EV chargers or generators These are two of the most common triggers for a service upgrade conversation. Both require significant dedicated electrical capacity, and both installations go more smoothly — and more safely — when the service infrastructure is properly sized first.
Homeowners in older properties If your home still has 100-amp service and you’re living in it the way people live today — with central air, multiple large appliances, home offices, and modern electronics — there’s a real chance your system is operating closer to its limits than you realize.
Homeowners planning renovations or additions A renovation is one of the most natural times to evaluate your service capacity. If an upgrade is warranted, doing it as part of a larger project is far more efficient than coming back to it later.
Homeowners preparing to sell A 100-amp service panel is increasingly a flag for buyers — particularly those planning to add an EV charger or generator. Upgrading before you list removes an obstacle and adds genuine value to the property.
Business owners expanding operations Adding equipment, expanding your space, or increasing your production capacity often means your electrical service needs to grow with your business. We evaluate your current service and recommend the right path forward.
Property developers and builders New construction and development projects require service infrastructure sized for the intended use from the start. We work with developers and builders to make sure service capacity is planned correctly.
What the Process Looks Like
An electrical service upgrade is a more involved project than a simple repair — but it’s also a well-defined one. Here’s what to expect.
Assessment and sizing. We visit your property, review your current service, and perform the load calculations necessary to determine the right service size for your needs. We explain our recommendation and the reasoning behind it before any work is scheduled.
Permit and utility coordination. We pull the required permits and coordinate with your utility provider to schedule the service disconnect and reconnect. Timing varies by utility, but we manage the process and keep you informed.
Installation day. There will be a period of time — typically several hours — when your power is off while the new service equipment is installed. We schedule this at a time that minimizes disruption and work efficiently to restore your power as quickly as possible.
Inspection and documentation. The work is inspected by the local authority having jurisdiction, and we provide you with complete documentation of the upgrade — including the permit, inspection results, and a labeled panel directory.
Walk-through. Before we leave, we walk you through the new system — what was installed, how it works, and what you should know going forward.
How It Works
You contact us. Tell us about your property and what’s prompting you to look into a service upgrade. We’ll ask a few questions and schedule a visit.
We assess your current service and load. A licensed electrician reviews your property, evaluates your current service capacity, and performs the calculations to determine what upgrade is appropriate.
We explain your options clearly. You’ll receive a straightforward explanation of what we found, what we recommend, and why — including what the process involves and what to expect on installation day.
We handle the project from start to finish. Permitting, utility coordination, installation, inspection, and documentation — we manage the entire process so you don’t have to.
